Located: James River Club, Scottsville, VA
Compensation: $22/hour not to exceed 4 hours/day, 20 hours/week
Classification: Part-time, 2 hours training in early June, 20 hrs/week June 12–August 11

Program Overview
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia's Summer Reading Program serves area children, ages six through nine. The program focuses on promoting early literacy through building background knowledge, reinforcing critical reading strategies and providing access to a variety of text for all children at their reading level. The program enhances awareness and increases participation in community services through field trips and service projects.

Main Responsibilities
The Summer Reading Teacher will implement reading activities for Club members ages 6-9 at the James River Club, help collect assessment data for members, collaborate in planning with the Summer Learning Specialist, assist in evaluation of program effectiveness, travel with volunteers, kids and staff to field trip locations, and assist with supervision of Club members.

Position Details

  • Implement designed reading lessons for age groups 6-9
  • Support and supervise small groups of students as they participate in independent activities
  • Provide differentiated opportunities for students to access the material
  • Attend field trips and engage students in meaningful learning experiences
  • Assess and report student performance in accordance with policies developed for the Summer Reading Program
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing program rules 
  • Treat and respond to all students with dignity and respect
  • Work to establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, and Club colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of students
  • Collaborate professionally with others in assessing and improving the program as well as maintain cooperative professional relationships with others
  • Assign volunteers to engage in meaningful activities with students
  • Maintain records as outlined by administrative regulations
  • Perform associated duties as assigned, related to the implementation of the summer reading and learning program

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Elementary certification 
  • Familiarity with effective reading practices
  • Reading instruction experience with 6-9 year olds
  • Ability to work collaboratively with adults and kids
