The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia's Summer Cycling Program requires a leader that is excited to teach cycling skills and techniques to youth. The program will begin with an in-Club, relationship-building component at the Southwood and Cherry Avenue Clubs and culminate on Ride Day Event in September.  Implementation will address aspects of safety instruction, team-building, individual goal-setting, endurance riding, and other technical cycling skill-building components. The Club seeks to attract and retain a number of youth (10 on the Varsity and 10+ each from the two Clubs on the Junior Varsity). This position will work an average of 15-30 hours per week from April-October with the option to supplement hours up to 40 hours a week working as a Program Assistant.  This will include up to 2 hours of ride time and 1 hour of set up/break down time per team, 2-3 days a week up to 4 days a week as the Cycling Event approaches and planning time.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Manage, direct and oversee Varsity Assistant coach and Junior Varsity cycling coach, volunteers, and cycling teams of up to 15 youth per team
  2. Ensure facilitation, management, administration, instruction and safety of the cycling program
  3. Engage youth ages 6-18 in the cycling program and maintain interest and enthusiasm throughout the duration of the program
  4. Insure safety of all youth member participants through oversight and education of bike safety and ride safety
  5. Instruct participants on safety, bike mechanics, advance ride safety, teamwork, goal setting, healthy living, and hydration and nutrition
  6. Maintain equipment to include regularly tune Club bikes, inflate tires, etc as well as coordinate repairs
  7. Coordinate and transport club participants and equipment to ride site utilizing the Club bus with the bike trailer attached
  8. Ability to teach teamwork, commitment, goal setting, discipline and other life skills through cycling
  9. Control program expenses through established community partnerships and generation of new community partnerships
  10. Coordinate and engage volunteers to assist in cycling practices and overall youth development
  11. Build relationships with Club staff to coordinate communication and scheduling of practices and equipment use
  12. Schedule and organize logistics of team practices
  13. Other duties as required




  • Ability to teach youth practical cycling skills and lead youth development
  • Must possess group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics
  • Must demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to motivate club members to succeed through physically challenging experiences
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills leveraging an ability to build and maintain relationships and communicate needs and engage volunteers
  • Develop practice schedules and coordinate logistics of practices with Club staff, volunteers, and youth members
  • Strong problem solving skills



  • Knowledge of cycling and 2+ years of group ride cycling experience
  • Previous coaching experience and/or youth development experience
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred
  • Valid driver's license with ability to be insured through the Organization insurance
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Must be able to pass a multi-point background check
